Do you ever wish that you could simply shut your eyes and be in an exotic location when they opened? That you could wake-up lounging on a sun-kissed beach, watching the waves of the ocean rise and fall? Or maybe you just fancy a museum and a meal in some rustic paradise?
Every now and again, it’s great to be impulsive, grab a last minute flight and wind up in some far-flung destination by the end of the day.
And that’s exactly what we’ve done with this guide – picked a few destinations from Gatwick Airport and given you our impulsive take on them. So, leave your car at the Gatwick meet and greet, wait for a while in the departure lounge and you’ll be in some grand city in no time.
Situated in south-eastern France, Grenoble is a stunner of a city. It provides an old, almost Mediterranean style of architecture that will strike at the heart of anyone nostalgic for the deep traditions of a fading culture.(image by FrenchHope)
Sitting at the foot of the Alps, the city is also the perfect place to prep your skiing equipment and get ready to hit the slopes, providing cable cars to nearby resorts.
But it’s more than just a city to pass through. The small but elegant Musee Dauphinois offers a breath-taking view of the city, while those of a sportier bent might want to have a look at Stade des Alpes, where the local football and rugby teams play.
The capital city of Spain, Madrid has a population of 3.3 million people and is loaded with everything you need for a good time.
For a start, take in the entire city with a trip to the rooftop terrace at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Calle de Alcalá, where you’ll be hit with a view straight across the Madrid skyline. Next up, grab a breath of fresh air in the city’s largest park, the Casa de Campo.
After you’ve admired the views and the sunshine, there’s a seemingly endless stream of bars and restaurants, although your best bet is the excitable atmosphere of Fatigas del Querer. (image by Atila Yumusakkaya)
There, you’ll be able to buy huge helpings of tapas, peruse an extensive wine list and be treated to a friendly group of staff (top tip: they’re fond of giving away free wine to customers they like).
A series of beautiful wrecks, Athens is the jewel in Greece’s crown, providing a rich look at history through its array of crumbling architecture and museums.
The pinnacle of the city’s achievement is the Acropolis, an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop. Featuring a startling number of ancient buildings and, nowadays, nondescript structures, it’s like taking a time portal into a sun laden past.(image by Ioannisdg)
